On foot, by bike, on the water
A sheltered harbour, an old rail line that's now a multi-use trail, and just enough hills to make a ride interesting.
The Rum Runners Trail
The Rum Runners Trail runs 119 km from Halifax to Lunenburg along a former rail corridor — hard-packed fine gravel, almost entirely flat, comfortable for hybrid bikes and walkers. Part of Nova Scotia's Blue Route. Through Mahone Bay, the trail runs just inland of Main Street.
The Bay to Bay Trail
The Bay to Bay Trail is the southernmost 11 km of the Rum Runners Trail, connecting Mahone Bay to Lunenburg's UNESCO Old Town. About 22 km return, mostly gravel, with one gentle 83-metre climb.
Castle Rock lookout
A short hike east of town off the East River section of the trail leads to Castle Rock, a granite outcrop with panoramic views over the bay. Allow an hour each way.
