People walking along Main Street in Mahone Bay on a sunny afternoon
Things to do

From a coffee & a stroll, to a week on the water

You can see Main Street in an hour. You can spend a week and still find new corners. Here's how locals would tell you to spend your time.

Walk the Three Churches and the waterfront

Start at the Visitor Information Centre and walk south along Edgewater Street. You'll pass Trinity United, St. John's Lutheran, and St. James' Anglican — three different denominations on one short stretch of shoreline. Bring a coffee from The Barn Coffee & Social House. → The Three Churches

Browse Main Street

Mahone Bay's Main Street is about a kilometre of independent shops. Pewter at Amos Pewter (589 Main Street), where artisans pour pieces by hand and you can watch. Hand-knit Maritime wool at Suttles & Seawinds. Local books and good scones at Biscuit Eater Books & Café. Loose-leaf blends at The Tea Brewery. → Best Places to Shop

Get on the water

The bay shelters paddlers from the open Atlantic, which makes it one of the best places in Nova Scotia for beginner-to-intermediate sea kayaking. Local outfitters offer half-day and full-day guided tours among the islands; nearby Pleasant Paddling (Blue Rocks) and Cape LaHave Adventures (Dublin Shore) run trips along the wider South Shore. The Civic Marina has 50 slips and a launch ramp for boaters arriving under their own power. → Civic Marina & Boating

Ride the Rum Runners Trail

The Rum Runners Trail runs 119 km from Halifax to Lunenburg along a former rail bed, passing through Hubbards, Chester, and Mahone Bay. It's hard-packed fine gravel, almost entirely flat. The Bay to Bay Trail segment links Mahone Bay directly to Lunenburg's UNESCO Old Town in about 11 km. Rent bikes or e-bikes at Sweet Ride Cycling at 523 Main Street ($40 for a regular bike, $75 for an e-bike, per full day). → Trails & Outdoors

Visit the Mahone Bay Museum

A small, free community museum at 578 Main Street in the historic Begin family home, built around 1874. Permanent exhibits cover the 1754 settlement, the Three Churches, Mi'kmaw history of the area, and Mahone Bay's shipbuilding past. Open daily through summer and on weekends through both fall festivals. → mahonebaymuseum.com

Eat and drink

Saltbox Brewing on Main Street. Rebecca's Restaurant and the Naked Oyster Seafood & Grill. The Mug & Anchor Pub on the water. The Innlet Café for the patio view. The Barn Coffee & Social House for the morning. Jo-Ann's Deli for the maple butter and the dulse you take home. → Best Places to Eat
