Protecting Nature, Preserving Charm

Mahone Bay’s scenic coastline is more than a beautiful backdrop—it’s a community-driven effort to build resilience against rising seas and climate change. Launched in 2022 as a pilot project along Edgewater Street, our Living Shoreline replaced vulnerable seawalls with natural salt marshes, lush native plants, and protective rocky barriers. This sustainable approach not only protects the town from erosion and flooding but also creates vibrant habitats where wildlife thrives.

Enhancing the Shoreline in 2025

Exciting upgrades are now underway! In 2025, Mahone Bay is extending the Living Shoreline further along Edgewater Street, adding new tidal wetlands and coastal habitats. Visitors will soon enjoy a scenic 450-metre coastal trail perfect for walking or cycling, offering stunning harbour views. The project also upgrades essential infrastructure, keeping our waters clean and ensuring the area stays inviting for generations.

A Long-Term Vision

The Living Shoreline is more than just a coastal defence—it's a promise to live harmoniously with nature. As salt marshes mature, they'll naturally strengthen Mahone Bay's defences and filter stormwater, creating a cleaner bay and healthier wildlife habitats. Future plans include interpretive signage to educate visitors and ongoing community involvement to share our knowledge and successes with others.
