Mahone Bay Founders Society – Settlers Museum
Details
Mahone Bay-Settlers Museum, is a cherished institution dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich history of Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia. Established in 1988 by the Mahone Bay Founders Society, the museum is housed in the historic Begin Family Home, constructed around 1874. The building exemplifies the "Lunenburg House" architectural style, characterized by its one-and-a-half-storey wood-frame structure and distinctive central five-sided dormer, known locally as a "Lunenburg bump."
The museum's exhibits offer a comprehensive look into Mahone Bay's past, including displays on the settlement by "Foreign Protestants" in 1754, the area's shipbuilding history, and the lives of the Begin family. Visitors can also explore the museum's research room, which houses an extensive archival collection for those interested in delving deeper into local history. The Mahone Bay Museum is open year-round, Monday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., or by appointment. The Mahone Bay Founders Society continues to play a pivotal role in the museum's operations, ensuring that the stories and artifacts of the past are preserved for future generations. Their dedication reflects a deep commitment to honouring the community's heritage and fostering a sense of shared history among residents and visitors alike.
